Founded in 1836, Austin was chosen as the capital of the Republic of Texas because of its central location, fresh water, natural beauty and the proximity of limestone and timber. Austin was named for Stephen F. Austin, a colonizer of the area.
Austin is located in central Texas along the Colorado River. A series of dams on the river has created seven lakes that stretch from the Austin city limits to a point 150 miles upstream. Lake Travis lies on Austin's western edge; Lake Austin and Town Lake are situated in the heart of "River City" dividing north and south.
Known for its young, creative, culturally rich community, Austin is set among the lush hills, lakes and rivers of the Texas hill country. Our temperate climate, with 300 days of sunshine annually, make Austin a favorite location for both visitors and new residents.
It's also been said ... Everything's bigger in Texas and Austin is no exception. Known as the Live Music Capitol of the World, it is a city with a big heart and far from ordinary.
From the arts, government, music scene and college town, it is very diverse. Add the locals love for the outdoors with our lakes and many outdoor sports, Austin offers something for everyone.
